With everything on the line at the NYSPHSAA state championships on Nov. 13, the Lake Placid girls cross country team showed up ready to run.

Racing at the Chenango Valley State Park course, the Blue Bomber girls took fourth place in the state for Class D — the best finish for the girls team in the school’s history. Of the 108 runners in the Class D race, all seven of Lake Placid’s runners were able to finish in the top 100.

The Blue Bombers finished with a team score of 91, which was good enough to outscore Maple Grove with 93 points, Berlin with 98 points, Pierson with 202 points and Millbrook with 212 points.

The three teams that beat the Blue Bombers were South Lewis with 44 points, Addison with 72 points and Delaware Academy with 79 points.

Lake Placid was led by Samantha Damico, who finished in fifth place with a time of 19 minutes and 51.6 seconds. Damico was the third-fastest point earner and the fastest eighth-grader in the race.

Lilly Rother was the next runner to cross the finish line for the Blue Bombers. Rother finished the race in 32nd place with a time of 21:43.70. Following behind Rother was senior captain Annie Rose-McCandlish. Rose-McCandlish (22:04.00) finished her final high school race by taking 43rd place.

Helping the Blue Bombers get a much-needed push to earn the fourth-place finish was eighth-grader Kai McKinnon (22:41.10) and tenth-grader Harley Cohen (23:30.00). The youngsters finished in 55th and 64th place to earn the team a top-five finish as the last two-point earners.

Lake Placid’s final two runners were Ellen Lansing (24:14.40) in 70th place and Jenna Fay (25:53.20) in 91st place.

Tupper Lake’s Raegan Fritts was the only girls runner who represented her school — she raced as an individual. Fritts finished with the race in 85th place with a time of 25:27.30.

On the boys side, Lake Placid finished the race in eighth place and the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks took 10th place.

With a team score of 163, the Blue Bombers were able to outscore Haldane with 226 points and Tupper Lake with 308 points. The seven teams ahead of the Blue Bombers included: Tri-Valley, Arkport, Beaver River, Maple Grove, Trumansburg, Mayfield and Port Jefferson.

Even though Lake Placid took eighth place as a team, Andrew Scanio had himself a day. Scanio placed in ninth with a time of 17:20.70. His finish was the fifth-fastest among all point earners in the Class D race.

Lake Placid’s next two finishers were senior Max Flanigan in 46th place with a time of 18:29.70 and Aidan Fay in 51st place with a time of 18:38.80.

Tupper Lake’s first runner was Michael Corneau. Corneau (20:37.20) finished in 97th place. Corneau was followed up by Lake Placid’s fourth finisher, Colin Francis. Francis (20:52.40) nabbed the last spot before the race’s 100th finisher in 99th place.

The next two local runners to finish Saturday’s race were both Blue Bombers. Will Hollander (21:26.50) in 101st place and Alex Dawson-Ellis (21:48.10) in 103rd.

The 108th to the 111th place spots were taken by all local boys. The four finishers were Tupper Lake’s Carter Riley (22:12.70), Lake Placid’s Colton Kondrat (22:22.10), Tupper Lake’s Tom Peterson (22:26.80) and Logan Flagg (22:27.28), respectively.
