LP girls win, boys fall to SL

SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Placid girls cross country teams were big winners at a meet on Tuesday, Oct. 12. at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center.

Lake Placid’s Samantha Damico was lightning quick, racing to the top spot.

Damico, an eighth-grader, finished with a time of 18:57. Her time was the sixth-fastest among all runners.

After Damico, Saranac’s Sienna Boulds (19:51) finished taking second place. The third-place spot came down to the wire with Lake Placid’s Lilly Rother (21:38) narrowly edging out Saranac Lake’s Megan Wilson (21:40).

The next two runners were Lake Placid’s Kai McKinnon (21:59) and Harley Cohen (22:06), taking fifth and sixth place respectively.

“We had a couple of kids that didn’t have the race that they wanted today, but no better today than like Saturday or at the end of the season,” Lake Placid cross country coach Mel Frazer said. “Anybody that didn’t have a good race pushed through. To me, it’s a training run.”

Saranac’s Molly Denis (22:33) and Laura Denial (22:42) finished next, followed by Red Storm’s Addi Ash (22:51). Lake Placid’s Annie Rose-McCandlish (22:54) capped off the rest of Lake Placid’s points. The Chiefs and Red Storm found themselves in a tight match. Saranac Lake’s Phoebe Peer (23:09) finished, next but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Chiefs.

“We train for the end of the season, so these are just markers along the way,” Saranac Lake girls cross country coach Elizabeth Ash said. “We are not super far away from our goal today, but we aren’t as close as we wanted to be either, so we just keep training and we just keep working towards where we want to be.”

With Lake Placid’s two wins over Saranac Lake and Saranac, the team moves to 14-1. The Saranac Lake girls, who fell to both the Blue Bombers and Chiefs, were able to beat Moriah/Boquet Valley. The team moves to 11-4.

The Lake Placid boys fall

On the boys’ side, Red Storm’s Sam Ash took first place with a time of 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Lake Placid’s top boys runner Andrew Scanio (17:16) did his thing, finishing in second.

Frazer said Scanio told her he went out too hard on the first lap trying to keep Sam in sight.

With Ash and Scanio finished, the third spot came down the wire. Saranac Lake’s Aiden Hesseltine (18:18) and Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay (18:23), were within arms reach of each other for much of the race. Hesseltine used every bit of energy he had left to edge out Fay by five seconds.

“That was a good finish for him,” Saranac Lake boys cross country coach Bill Peer said. “I thought he positioned himself in the right place and he was there for a nice strong finish, so it was good.”

Saranac’s Andrew Denial (18:52) claimed the fifth-place spot. The next four spots were all Lake Placid and Saranac Lake runners. Red Storm’s Jake Kollmer (19:03) and Morgan Martin (19:48) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Lake Placid’s Max Flanigan (19:54) finished eighth and Saranac Lake’s Max Hall (19:58) finished ninth.

“I thought the boys ran well,” Peer said. “I thought we responded well. I thought that in our second loop, we picked up some positions so I’m pleased. I’m pleased with the win. Lake Placid is a much-improved team and Mel has done a nice job with them. I thought we handled Moriah/Boquet Valley well and I thought we handled Saranac well, so I’m pleased.”

Saranac Lake’s runners were able to earn wins against all three, Lake Placid, Moriah Boquet Valley, and Saranac Central. The loss was the only one for Lake Placid, who defeated Saranac Central. Saranac Central was able to defeat Moriah/ Boquet Valley.

With the wins, the Red Storm boys move to 14-1 on the season, while Lake Placid is now 9-6. The Lake Placid cross country teams will travel for an invitational meet at the Saratoga Spa State Park on Saturday, Oct. 16.
