Weibrecht places 20th in Lake Louise

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta – Lake Placid native Andrew Weibrecht was the top American super-G men’s finisher Sunday at the World Cup event in Lake Louise.

Weibrecht, a two-time Olympic medalist, placed 20th with a time of 1 minute, 32.33 seconds. Teammate Travis Ganong of Squaw Valley, California, was 21st in 1:33.45, Jared Goldberg of Holladay, Utah, was 25th in 1:33.62, and Steven Nyman of Sundance, Utah, was 29th in 1:33.78.

“I think I was winning the top split, but then I stuck my head into a panel just before the jump and got all twisted up,” Ganong said. “Both top buckles on my left boot came off, my goggles were crooked and I lost my pole. I lost another second and a half there. I’m happy with my skiing, but there was that one big mistake that held me back. All things considered, you just have to send it and push hard. It’s the only way to ski race.”

Kjetil Jansrud of Norway won the event with a time of 1:32.02. It was his second World Cup victory in two days after winning Saturday’s season-opening downhill event.

“I never expected a double win,” Jansrud said. “That’s something you rarely see in alpine skiing. Kind of surprised.”

Matthias Mayer of Austria was second in 1:32.31 and Dominik Paris of Italy was third in 1:32.33.

“Yesterday, our best position was ninth and 13th and 15th and we weren’t happy about that, so everybody tried to go better today,” Mayer said. “Today was better than yesterday. I found the right set up for the snow and the cold conditions. I tried to push harder and it was good.”

The World Cup tour now heads to Beaver Creek for the Audi Birds of Prey Race week, with racing beginning Friday.

“I’m happy with my ski racing and I’m ready to go again in Beaver Creek,” Ganong said. “Coming into this race weekend I hadn’t had much training after hurting my knee. I got a little confidence after this weekend. My knee is feeling great and my body is feeling great.”

Starting at $1.44/week.
