OGDENSBURG – Lake Placid’s boys soccer season came to an end Tuesday night against Potsdam in a NYSPHSAA Class C tournament game.

Neither team had scored as the match went into two overtime periods that also failed to produce a goal. Finally, the Sandstoners were able to one-up the Blue Bombers during a round of penalty kicks to advance to the state quarterfinals.

“Those 10 shots at the end; we could have done that at 6 o’clock and just gone home,” Hemsley said with a laugh.

Hemsley was only half joking, though.

Lake Placid came out particularly strong and kept the action near the Sandstoners’ net for most of the first half.

The Bombers launched a similar effort going into the second half, and had two shots on goal within the first three minutes. The first attempt was a header at 2 minutes, 20 seconds by Stuart Baird, followed by an dangerous attempt at 5:30 by Ryan Damp.

Then Lake Placid seemed to get tired.

“I don’t think we played as well as we could have during the second half,” Hemsley said. “As we got tired, they got chances. In the first half, I was really happy with the way we started. I would have liked a few more chances on goal.”

The Bombers took seven shots on goal to Potsdam’s five.

About 20 minutes into the second half, Lake Placid goalie Noah Mohr left the net to pursue an attempt on the goal. That almost backfired when he failed to gain control of the ball, leaving a wide open shot for Potsdam that was blocked by Lake Placid’s Tucker Angelopoulos.

“Tucker is just so fast,” Hemsley said. “He’s a hockey goalkeeper, so when our goalkeeper decided to go for a little walk, it was natural for Tucker to get back between the pipes, although the pipes are a little bigger in this game.”

That’s not to say the Bombers were slacking. Alex Brandes had a near-miss on goal at 31:45, which he followed with a nice pass at 35:45 to Baird, whose head ball was saved by ‘Stoners goalkeeper Ashler Herrick.

The Bombers also had moments of putting the pressure on in overtime, but they were never quite able to make it happen.

The match ended when Lake Placid’s Pat Kane failed to score during the penalty kick shootout. Baird, Brandes, Miles Lussi and Connor Preston each converted penalty kicks for Lake Placid.

The ‘Stoners made all five of their penalty kicks, earning them the right to play Lake George on their home turf Saturday.

“You hate to see it go to penalties, because it’s a crap shoot, and that’s what it was,” Hemsley said. “One of our seniors misses a penalty, and that’s his last memory of what has been a great season.”

Lake Placid will lose 12 seniors next year.

“There are 10 kids coming up from 10th grade,” Hemsley said. “That whole back line is seniors. I’ve got to build a whole new defense, but that’s where I was when I played, so I find it easy to organize defenses.”

Potsdam is 14-5 and Lake George is 18-1-1. Lake Placid finished 9-7.
