LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid girls soccer team mounted a second-half rally to claim a 2-1 victory Monday over visiting Ticonderoga on the Blue Bombers field.

In a match that saw all three goals scored after intermission, Lissy Ashley netted the equalizer for Lake Placid less than two minutes after Ticonderoga grabbed the lead. The Blue Bombers then won the game with 23 minutes remaining after the Sentinels gave up an own goal.

“Their goal kind of woke our kids up,” Lake Placid head coach Heather Brewer said. “I think giving up that goal and shifting some players around in the second half gave us the spark we needed.”

After a scoreless first half, all three of the game’s goals were netted within a span of less than six minutes before the midway point of the second half.

The Sentinels jumped on top 1-0 on a goal from Delaney Hughes with 11:52 gone in the second stanza. The sophomore scored on a well-placed ball from the top of the penalty area when she launched a shot that sailed over the head of Lake Placid goalkeeper Laura Stanton and snuck just under the crossbar. Savanah Bezon assisted on the play.

The Blue Bombers then caught fire. Ashley, a sophomore, pulled Lake Placid even at 1-1 with 13:48 gone in the second on another pretty goal, which her first as a varsity player. Lake Placid was applying pressure on the play and Ashley gained control of the ball in the box in front of the net and sent a shot past Ticonderoga goalie Lillith Ida.

Payton Barney then helped Lake Placid notch the win, although she wasn’t credited with the goal that ended up in the net at the 17-minute mark of the second. On the play, Barney was moving the ball into the Sentinels end of the field along the right sideline and fired a long shot from well outside the penalty area. The ball wound up in Ida’s hands, but she was unable to control the shot and it went in the back of the net.

Ticonderoga applied some late pressure and had a couple of close scoring chances with about three minutes left on the clock, but the Blue Bombers defense took control during the closing seconds and sent the ball deep into the Sentinels zone to eat up the clock.

“I thought we relaxed a bit after scoring that first goal,” Ticonderoga coach Kathy Tubbs said. “I think Lake Placid’s defense did a nice job after that. Lake Placid has a little better skilled players than we do, but we hung with them. I very happy with our effort.”

Both teams now have 3-2 records after the match. Ticonderoga held a 9-7 edge in shots. Stanton played strong in goal for the Blue Bombers and made seven saves to earn the win. Ida recorded five stops in nets for the Sentinels.

“That was a good win for us,” Brewer said. “I think we had more possession, and that was a factor. We generally have pretty close matches with Ti.”

The Blue Bombers play again Wednesday on the road against Moriah. Ticonderoga next hosts Chazy, also on Wednesday.
