Burger, Van Dorn top mini-tri opener
LAKE PLACID – The 30th season of the weekly High Peaks Mini-Triathlon series kicked off on Monday, and Dave Burger of Pennellville was the overall champion on an evening that saw a field of 48 compete in the three-leg race held in Lake Placid.
The mini-tri includes a 400-yard swim in Mirror Lake, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run. Burger, a familiar competitor in the race, was the only triathlete to finish in less than an hour. His finish result of 59 minutes and 47 seconds included the fastest bike and run times in the race. He was one of two competitors who finished the run in under 20 minutes, clocking that leg in 16:29.
Bloomingdale’s Doug Hazelden was the men’s overall runner-up in 1:04:38, and Saranac Lake’s DJ Racette was a close third with a 1:04:46 finish. Greg Moore, also from Saranac Lake, was fourth in 1:05:03.
Lake Placid’s Roseanne VanDorn finished off a busy three days of racing in the mini-tri. On Saturday and Sunday, she competed in the Whiteface Uphill bike race and the Wilmington-Whiteface 100k mountain bike race. She followed that by taking the overall women’s win in the first mini-tri of the season, crossing the finish line in 1:05:48.
Wilmington’s Caitlin Skufca took second for the women in 1:06:56 and Colleen Porter of Lake Placid was third in 1:09:15.
Lake Placid’s Jim Grant and Bloomingdale residents Joe Gladd and Jay Niederbuhl teamed up to win the relay title. Grant started the trio off with the fastest swim time of the day, a 6:42, and Niederbuhl finished with the second-fastest run result in the race, an 18:25 to help the team post a 1:03:24 combined time.
The second mini-triathlon is slated for Monday, June 30 and starts next to the Mirror Lake beach. The race begins at 6:30 p.m.
