Local Nordic skiers had their best showing in years at the high school state championships Feb. 24-25 at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua.

The Tri-Lakes was represented by skiers from Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, and four of those skiers placed in the top 20; two boys and two girls. Skate races were Monday, followed by the classic races, which included a relay.

“It’s the best that I’ve seen in the eight years I’ve been coaching, girls and boys” said Lake Placid coach Bill Frazer. “Back in the day if we put someone in the top 20, we were (excited).”

Lake Placid junior Nina Armstrong had the best individual showing, finishing second in both the skate and classic races. She was followed Saranac Lake sophomore Jackie Garso, who finished 16th in the skate race.

Riley Douglas of Honeoye Falls-Lima won the girls skate-ski race in 25:50, and also turned in the top time in the relay with an 11:18.5.

On the boys side, Lake Placid eighth-grader Scottie Schulz took sixth place and Saranac Lake sophomore Bryce Hartmann took eighth place. Schulz also placed seventh in the classic race while Hartmann took

19 in the classic race.

“Scottie Schulz got sixth place, which for an eighth-grader is pretty amazing when he’s going up against seniors,” Frazer said. “He was hoping for a top 10, so definitely sixth place he was really psyched about.”

Connor Green of Pittsford Mendon won the boys individual skate race in 27:09.7.
