Three athletes from upstate New York are competing for trips to the Sochi Winter Games as the United States Olympic speedskating team trials start today, in Kearns, Utah.

Trevor Marsicano of Ballston Spa headlines the list, which also includes Lake Placid’s Krissa Miller and Petra Acker of Clifton Park. Marsicano will be gunning for his second Olympics after collecting a silver medal from a team event at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.

In all, five skaters from the Saratoga Winter Club will participate in the trials.

Miller, who was a figure skater and Lake Placid resident three years ago, switched to speedskating and moved to Utah. Her goal was just to qualify to compete in the trials, and is a big long shot to make the U.S. Olympic team.

The trials will be for both long and short track speedskating, and will air on both network and cable television with coverage on NBC and NBC Sports Network.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials will select the 2014 U.S. Olympic Speedskating Team, which will represent Team USA in Sochi, Russia.

NBC Sports Group will provide 13 hours of coverage over the 11-day event. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for long track speedskating will be held from today through Jan. 1, 2014, followed by the short-track speedskating trials Jan. 2-5, 2014.

Carr-Hughes Productions, based in Saratoga Springs with co-owner Bob Hughes living in Wilmington, has been selected by NBC to handle the television production of the event. Greenfield Center resident and five-time Emmy winner Jim Carr will produce the shows. Carr-Hughes has a long history producing events of this type and for the last three years also produced the highly successful “Summer at Saratoga” horse racing series for NBC.

All speedskating events will be held at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.

A total of 30 athletes will be named to the 2014 U.S. Olympic Speedskating Team, with skaters securing a coveted spot on nearly every telecast. The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be held Feb. 6-23 in Sochi, Russia and covered on the NBC family of networks.

Starting at $1.44/week.
