Northwood hockey sweeps doubleheaders

The Northwood girls hockey team picked up two wins over the Rice Knights of Burlington, Vt. in a weekend doubleheader.

The Huskies beat Rice 3-1 on Saturday at the Saranac Lake Civic Center, then came back to secure a 2-0 win on Sunday.

Lauren Bautista scored Northwood’s first goal Saturday on a pass from Rachel Lustenring. Cailey Hutchison added to the lead with a short-handed goal just minutes later.

Katey Snyder of Saranac Lake tended net for the Huskies in the first half and recorded a shutout.

Rice fought back late in the game with a goal, but Nicole Mensi put the game away with an empty-netter to secure the 3-1 Northwood win.

On Sunday, Lindsay Powers and Snyder combined to record the shutout in goal for the Huskies.

Cassie Kent scored two goals for Northwood on Sunday.

With the two-game sweep, Northwood improved to 11-1-1 on the season.

The Huskies travel to Stanstead College this weekend for their first league games.

BOYS HOCKEY

The Northwood Junior team downed Stanstead College twice over the weekend in exhibition games at Providence College and Merrimack College.

The Huskies won 4-3 and 3-1, with Johan Blomquist and Aidan Pelino each picking up wins in goal.

Northwood improved to 8-2 on the seaason with the victories.
