LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid boys soccer were riding a wave of momentum going its final regular season game against Northern Adirondack on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The Blue Bombers used three first-half goals Tuesday, Oct. 15 to down Willsboro. The 3-0 win came in the wake of a 3-1 victory over Westport on Friday, Oct. 11 and a 1-1 tie against Chazy, the state’s No. 1 ranked Class D team at the time, the previous Wednesday.

Lake Placid were slated to round out its regular season schedule at home against Northern Adirondack, a make-up of a match that was rained out last Monday.

The Blue Bombers offense came on strong in the first half against Willsboro. Ryan Damp gave Lake Placid a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute after taking a pass from Andrew Meister.

Nzoni Thompson kept it going with a goal at the 22:42 mark and Chris Williams boosted the lead to 3-0 with a score at 28:33. Williams assisted on Thompson’s goal and Stuart Baird was credited with the assist on Williams’ goal.

Lake Placid is 7-2-2 overall.

Oct. 11

Lake Placid 3, Westport 1

WESTPORT – The Lake Placid boys soccer team built an early two-goal lead then tacked on another late to secure a 3-1 victory over Westport on Oct. 11.

Stuart Baird opened the scoring eight minutes into the match after taking a pass from Nzoni Thompson. Alex Brandes tacked on another goal in the 16th minute on a feed from Shane NcNierney.

The Blue Bombers held the 2-0 lead until Ryan Davis connected for Westport with an unassisted goal at the 32:37 mark.

The 2-1 score held most of the second half, but Pat Kane locked up the victory with an insurance goal in the 33rd minute of the second half. Baird was credited with the assist.

Chris Kordziel manned the goalmouth for Lake Placid and made seven saves.

Oct. 9

Lake Placid 1, Chazy 1

LAKE PLACID – Lake Placid’s soccer players were hoping the time would be right to exact revenge on Chazy when the two teams tangled for the second time this season on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The host Blue Bombers weren’t able to fully avenge last month’s 3-0 loss to the Eagles, but they were able to walk off the field with some satisfaction after they finished in a 1-1 deadlock with New York state’s top-ranked Class D boys team.

Nzoni Thompson got Lake Placid off to a quick start when he scored 51 seconds into the match, and the Blue Bombers defense held strong from there, giving up just one goal the rest of the way in a battle that ended just before dark after extending into two 10-minute overtimes.

“It was a fiercely contested match,” Lake Placid coach Stuart Hemsley said. “Chazy doesn’t have a bad player on their team. We like to go up against teams like that. We weren’t going to outplay them, so we knew we really had to tighten up our defense, and we did a good job with that.”

Both goals were scored in the opening half. Lake Placid caught Chazy off guard with the first tally, which came on a shot that Thompson chipped over the outstretched arms of Eagles goalkeeper Trent Blais. Thompson, a junior, netted the shot from just outside the penalty area after receiving a pass from Andrew Meister, who had a strong performance at midfield.

The Eagles got the equalizer at the 28:12 mark of the half on a goal scored by Tyler Hicks off a pass from Alex Rabideau.

Chazy head coach Rob McAuliffe didn’t like how his team started out the match, but said he was happy to see the Eagles battle back against a tough opponent.

“We kind of took a one-minute rest at the beginning of the game,” Mcauliffe said. “When we fell into that early 1-0 hole, we knew we had our work cut out for us because Lake Placid defends so well. I think did a nice job generating scoring chances.”

The Eagles held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Blais made four saves in nets for Chazy and Chris Kordziel recorded six stops in goal for Lake Placid.

“Our guys didn’t need any motivation for this game,” Hemsley said. “We didn’t play as well as we wanted up there, and we know it’s really tight in the standings. We’ll take the tie.”

GIRLS SOCCER

Oct. 14

AuSable Valley 2, Lake Placid 0

CLINTONVILLE – The AuSable Valley girls soccer team scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory over Lake Placid on Oct. 14.

Rachel Knapp scored the game’s first goal just after the second-half kickoff, then Meghan Strong piled on another tally 13 minutes later to give the Patriots the advantage.

Laura Stanton held strong in goal for the Blue Bombers with 10 saves. AuSable Valley held a 15-8 edge in shots taken.

Lake Placid is 3-8-2 overall. AuSable Valley is 4-8.

Oct. 10

Ticonderoga 2, Lake Placid 0

LAKE PLACID – The Ticonderoga girls soccer team scored a goal in each half Oct. 10 on the way to a 2-0 Northern Soccer League victory over Lake Placid.

With the Blue Bombers seniors playing their final regular season home game, Lake Placid outshot the Sentinels 8-2 but were unable to find the back of the net.

Savannah Bezon scored the game’s first goal just before halftime and Kylie Austin put the game out of reach with a goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Laura Stanton made two saves for Lake Placid.

VOLLEYBALL

Oct. 15

Beekmantown 3, Lake Placid 0

LAKE PLACID – The Beekmantown volleyball team rolled to a 25-6, 25-11, 25-5 victory over Lake Placid on Oct. 15.

Taylor Maiorca had two kills, two assists and one block and Brenna Garrett had two aces and four service points to lead the Blue Bombers.

Grace Kelly was the star of the night for Beekmantown with 23 points, nine aces, six kills and 10 digs. Kendra LaFountain chipped in 23 assists, two kills and nine digs.

Lake Placid is 2-11 on the season.

Oct, 14

Plattsburgh 3, Lake Placid 2

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid volleyball team is on a hot streak, but had to settle for a five-set loss Oct. 14 against one of top teams in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference.

After dropping all of its matches last season and starting this year 0-9, Lake Placid rebounded with two straight wins last week, beating Saranac Lake and Peru.

The Blue Bombers put up quite a fight Monday against Plattsburgh before falling 25-14, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22. Lake Placid is now 2-10, while Plattsburgh is 8-4 and in third place in the conference.

Taylor Maiorca and Brenna Garrett led the way for the Blue Bombers. Maiorca put down seven kills and seven assists to go along with two digs and one block. Garrett racked up six aces, seven assists, seven kills and 15 service points.

Ally Wallace chipped in six points, three aces, two kills and four digs, Alexis Megliore had six digs and seven points, Kiana Fell had four kills and Emily Eaton collected eight points, three aces and three digs to contribute for Lake Placid.

Oct. 10

Lake Placid 3, Peru 0

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid volleyball team won its second match in a row Thursday, Oct. 10 with a 25-23, 25-13, 29-27 victory over Peru.

Ally Wallace had a strong match of the Blue Bombers, collecting 13 service points, four aces and five kills. Brenna Garrett racked up seven points, four kills and six assists.

Taylor Maiorca chipped in four assists and two kills and Georgia O’Leary and Kiana Fell each served up six points.

Lea Perry led the way for the Indians with three aces and seven assists, while teammates Louie Dayton and Karlee Stephney had eight points apiece.

CROSS COUNTRY

Oct. 15

LAKE PLACID – Lake Placid junior Nina Armstrong ran away from the field to capture first place in the girls race against Beekmantown and AuSable Valley on Oct. 15.

Armstrong completed the course in 22 minutes, 8 seconds to beat out runner-up Rachel Kashorek of Beekmantown, who finished in 22:48.

Erin Skufca was the next Blue Bombers runner to cross the line, finishing fifth in 28:28.

Beekmantown swept the top five spots in the boys race, led by Colin Quakenbush, who finished in 18:25.

Karl Schulz was Lake Placid’s top boys runner with a time of 19:57, which was good for seventh place. Teammate Trent White finished 10th in 20:11 and Forest Ledger was 11th in 20:19.
