LAKE PLACID – Local and regional skaters performed admirably at the North Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championships, held Oct. 3 through 8 at the Olympic Center.

Although in the past the regional championships have been for higher levels to qualify for national competition, the events at this championship included qualifying and non-qualifying events.

The non-qualifying events were for skaters below the qualifying levels, and the qualifying events allowed those that qualified the opportunity to skate in sectional competition. From sectional competition, skaters can then qualify for the national championships, which can lead to the world championships or Olympic Games.

Several Skating Club of Lake Placid members competed in the non-qualifying events, as well as regional skaters who may not belong to the club but still consider Lake Placid a home base. In the No-Test Girls Free Skate, Delaney O’Brian of the St Lawrence Figure Skating Club, who trains in Lake Placid, placed first. Alexa Harper of the Skating Club of Lake Placid also placed fifth in that event.

Placing first in the Pre-Preliminary Boys Free Skate was individual member Devon Wambolt, who often trains in Lake Placid.

There were two Skating Club of Lake Placid skaters competing in the Preliminary Girls Test Track event. Placing third in the event was Carly Brox, and fellow SCLP member Sandra Delarm placed fifth.

In the Preliminary Girls Free Skate Group A, SCLP member Laura Shadlock placed fourth.

Skating Club of Lake Placid member Ciana Cerruti placed first in the Open Juvenile Girls Free Skate. In the Intermediate Ladies Test Track division, Alexandra DiLillo of the Skating Club of Lake Placid earned fourth place.

Also offered during the non-qualifying events were Moves in the Field and Showcase events. Moves in the Field are compulsory moves that each correspond to a certain level, and improve skating quality, while Showcase events allow the skater to perform a program which will be judged primarily on entertainment value, style and musical expression.

In the preliminary Moves in the Field event, individual member Devon Wambolt placed third, while Skating Club of Lake Placid member Laine Ridenour earned fourth place.

Winning the Pre-Juvenile/Novice Showcase event was Saratoga Springs Figure Skating Club member Victoria Los, who also uses Lake Placid as a training base.

There were also several Skating Club of Lake Placid members in the qualifying events. In the intermediate ladies qualifying round Group B event, Amanda Shadlock placed 11th. Cierra Nelson earned ninth place in the intermediate ladies free skating event.

Saratoga Springs Figure Skating Club member Victoria Los also skated in a qualifying event in addition to a non-qualifying event, placing eighth in Novice Ladies Qualifying Round Group A.
