LAKE PLACID – After falling behind by a goal, the Lake Placid girls soccer team was on the verge of upsetting visiting Seton Catholic on Oct. 1 when Liza Marinis scored to put the Blue Bombers ahead 2-1 with less than seven minutes remaining in the match.

Paige Spittler, however, came through in a big way for the Knights. Not only did Spittler tie the game by scoring her second goal of the day less than two minutes later, she also completed a hat trick with 1:22 left on the clock to deal the Blue Bombers a tough 3-2 setback in Northern Soccer League Division II action.

In a contest that saw both teams score once in the first half, Spittler lifted Seton Catholic to a 1-0 edge with the first goal of the match at the 24:21 mark of the opening half. Junior Payton Barney then buried a direct kick from about 40 yards out for Lake Placid with five minutes left in the half to send the teams into intermission in a 1-1 deadlock.

Marinis then gave Lake Placid the lead, scoring from in close at the 33:45 mark of the second stanza on a goal assisted by Carissa Kennedy as a host Blue Bombers attacked the Knights net guarded by keeper Kelly Ryan.

But the host team’s lead didn’t hold up as Spittler got to work in Lake Placid’s end of the pitch. Spittler notched her second of the game at the 35:53 mark, and then capped off a three-player exchange for the game-winning goal scored with plenty of traffic in front of the Lake Placid net tended by Emily Barney.

The play started when Emily Eaton headed the ball toward the net from about the 18-yard mark. Teammate Ashley Carpenter gained control, then sent a pass to Spittler, who ripped a high shot into the right corner of the net.

Carpenter finished the game with assists on all three Seton Catholic goals.

The Knights held a slim 13-12 edge in shots. Emily Barney, a junior, and Ryan each made 10 saves in goal for their respective squads.

With the win, the Knights improved to 8-2, while the Blue Bombers dropped to 3-4-1.
