Hand-in-hand ahead of the pack

LAKE PLACID – Holding hands, sisters Nina and Gabby Armstrong of Lake Placid crossed the finish line together to tie for first place overall for the girls in a high school cross country meet that also featured teams from Saranac Lake and Lake Placid on Oct. 1.

Karl Schulz also had a strong showing for the Blue Bombers, placing third individually in the boys race.

The meet was held under warm, sunny conditions on the Blue Bombers’ home course at the Olympic Sports Complex’s biathlon center. Saranac Lake’s girls earned a sweep in the girls meet while Ticonderoga topped both its opponents in the boys competition.

Lake Placid’s boys earned one victory, defeating Saranac Lake 19-39.

In the girls race, the Armstrongs finished well ahead of the rest of the pack, both crossing the line in 22 minutes, 46 seconds. Sentinels runner Naomi Forkas placed third in 23:32, and Saranac Lake’s runners then grabbed the next six spots.

Sophie Theorn led the Red Storm, finishing fourth in 24:14. She was followed by teammates Johanna Mohrs (24:19), Grace Sullivan (24:29), Jacinda Riggs (26:20), Caroline Dodd (26:26) and Jackie Garso (27:41).

Briana Roy was 11th for the Blue Bombers in 31:13 and Morgan Paul finished 12th for the Saranac Lake girls in 33:28.

Ticonderoga’s boys placed five runners in the top 10 on their way to a sweep of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Schulz, a Blue Bombers sophomore, claimed third place in 18:39. The top two spots belonged to the Sentinels, with Shawn Silliman winning the race in 18:21 and Tyler Beldon the runner-up in 18:38. Jacob Young placed fourth for Ticonderoga in 19:38.

Zane Pelleteri topped the Red Storm contingent, finishing fifth in 19:44.

Three more Lake Placid runners placed in the top 10 as Trent White finished seventh in 20:16, Forest Ledger was ninth just two seconds back and Scott Schulz secured 10th place in 21:07.

Junior Curtis Rissberger placed 11th for Lake Placid in 21:08, Saranac Lake senior Max Paul was 12th in 21:13 and Nick Saulpaugh of the Blue Bombers finished 13th in 21:18.

The Lake Placid cross country teams will travel to Plattsburgh for its next meet against the Hornets and Northeastern Clinton.
