To the editor:
On behalf of the Ironman Lake Placid Volunteer Kayak Team, we wish to express our thanks to all the shoreowners along Mirror Lake who helped us evacuate the swimmers from Sunday's swim portion of the Ironman race.
The thunderstorm presented a challenge for us this year, and the quick clearing of the lake was due in large part to the generous efforts of these Lake Placid residents who literally extended a hand to help swimmers exit the lake.
Thanks, too, to the folks who gave some of our kayakers safe harbor as they waited out the storm to be able to paddle back to our launch site on the Main Street side of the lake.
Being on a lake during a thunderstorm is every paddler's nightmare, but to have the additional responsibility of a lake full of swimmers compounded our concerns for everyone's safety.
We also want to publicly commend all water safety volunteers for their wonderfully executed efforts yesterday. We are proud of your work and truly appreciate you keeping the safety of others in the forefront of your minds.
Well done folks!
