To the editor:
On behalf of the Lake Placid Visitors Bureau, I extend congratulations to the Lake Placid Horse Show Association for being awarded the rights to a third consecutive week of show jumping competition by the U.S. Equestrian Federation.
This event has grown from a one-week competition in 1970 to the two-week event that has since become the must-attend summer event for horsemen for over 40 years. I'm confident that this next step in its evolution will even further bolster our destination's status in this market as the home of one of the country's most pre-eminent equestrian events.
Beginning in 2014, the addition of another week of competition will provide our community with a tremendous opportunity to augment the already-significant economic boost resulting from the horse show events that have traditionally kicked off our summer visitor season.
To ensure the extended event's initial success, it is imperative that the local business community embraces its stake in growing that third week. We all now have an opportunity to cooperatively support its growth, with an ultimate goal of driving three-week stays.
I strongly encourage our business community to jump in the saddle and support the horse shows, and there are a number of ways to become engaged in its success.
The horse shows continue to attract world-class participants in part because of the prize money awarded for each of the competing classes. For those who are not already members of the association, please consider investing in the additional week's prize purses and the future of these events by becoming members.
Businesses should also help to entice horse show participants to extend their stay for the full three weeks by developing creative promotions, such as value-added packages and by offering competitive three-week lodging prices, for instance.
By working together to grow this third week, especially during its critical first year, we will ultimately augment the already-significant economic boost that has resulted from the horse show events for the past 44 consecutive years.
Together, let's make the 45th Annual Lake Placid, I Love New York and the new Adirondack Horse Shows the most outstanding experience yet for participants, businesses and residents alike.
