Column brings back fond memories of Wells

To the editor:

Courtney Bastian’s article from the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society a couple weeks ago brought back many memories. I remember Mr. Willis Wells very well. He was a wonderful man and did a lot for Lake Placid for many years.

I especially remember those Christmas parties on his porch. The candy was delicious, but the biggest treat was the big, juicy oranges. So sweet. Imagine fruit in the North Country in winter. What a surprise.

The insert was taken at the top of Signal Hill. The tower on the left was the “watch tower” where a group of citizens took shifts looking for foreign aircraft. Fortunately, I do not recall that there was ever a report of a foreign airplane.

Thanks for the memories.
