In support of Dr. Jill Biden

(Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Joseph Epstein’s opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal on Dec. 11.)

To the editor:

Dear Joseph Epstein:

My name is Julia, and I am 9 years old. I read your opinion piece, “Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D.” at the dinner table tonight, in which you argue, “Jill Biden should think about dropping the honorific, which feels fraudulent, even comic.” And you rudely refer to her as “Kiddo.”

I think Dr. Jill Biden worked really hard to get that title, and you are asking her to throw out the title and the hard work. She didn’t get an honorary degree; she got a real one.

Also, I thought it was incredibly rude that you kept saying, “men” when it could have been a woman. For example, when you talked about the “rich men” that might make donations. You also said the secretary is a “woman,” but it could have been a man.

Why are you even talking about this? This is an unnecessary topic that is not relevant to anyone. Why do you even care if she is addressed as a doctor? You don’t have to call her that, but she is a hard-working woman to me and to many people.

As a young girl, I think Dr. Biden is an inspiring woman to all the young women and mothers of the world.

Go, Dr. Jill Biden!

Sincerely,

Julia Handler
