Lake Placid Central School and COVID-19

To the editor:

On behalf of the Board of Education of Lake Placid Central School District, I write to thank the community and update you on our activities in these unprecedented and volatile times.

On March 21, our region’s superintendents made the difficult and unanimous decision to close our school buildings due to COVID-19, and move to online instruction. The staff, teachers and administrators of LPCSD, with the guidance of Superintendent Dr. Roger Catania, were already prepared for this day because they had an emergency plan in place. Within hours, new “classrooms” formed, virtual teaching began, assignments were distributed, and students resumed learning.

Our food security plan for needy students is now enhanced to include their entire families. Staff and bus drivers are making and distributing over 150 breakfasts and lunches to students every other day. The “Backpack Program,” a volunteer-funded project, provides students with food for weekends and holidays, has now been expanded to include families. The district is delivering 100 boxes of “backpack program” food weekly. The weekly food boxes are made possible by generous contributions from local businesses, foundations and people.

On behalf of the LPCSD’s Board of Education, I would like to thank all those who have, and will generously donate to feeding students and families. To our teachers, teaching assistants and staff, for your ingenuity and countless hours in educating our students. To the superintendent, administrators and staff, we applaud you as we recognize your efforts and guidance. And to the students and families, we thank you for your sacrifices because of this experience. Although it is not easy, most of us seem to be making the best of this situation. Your time and energy applied day after day is key to your children’s learning. Thank you for persevering. The LPCSD together with you, our community, are to be commended for the job we are doing in educating and caring for the students of our district. It makes the Board of Education very proud.

Please, remain safe, stay healthy, and we look forward to the day when we all are together again in one building.

Sincerely,

Richard Preston, president
