Celebrate Wilmington’s bicentennial on Saturday

Welcome to Wilmington sign (News photo — Andy Flynn)

Happy birthday, Mayberry. You turned 200 years old in 2022 as the town of Wilmington.

Last week, the Lake Placid News and Adirondack Daily Enterprise presented a sliver of Wilmington’s history in a special bicentennial publication. It barely touched the surface; there’s no way we could have covered all the town’s history in 16 pages. Yet we did our best to give residents and visitors a keepsake — featuring old and

new photos — with our own version of the Historic Walking Tour from the archives

of the Wilmington Historical Society.

Save the date: Saturday, Aug. 20. That’s when the town of Wilmington will celebrate its bicentennial with a day full of activities. And you’re all invited!

Help Wilmington celebrate this milestone by lining state Route 86 and cheering on the Bicentennial Parade participants. It starts at 1 p.m. by the Little Super Market and ends at the old Steinhoff’s Sportsman’s Inn property. Jane Hardy

Peck — also known as Aunt Jane — will

be the grand marshal.

Later in the day, the Wilmington Get Together group will host activities at the town beach, including live music and food starting at 3 p.m.

This is a perfect time to celebrate all things Wilmington.

Remember … Wilmington is the home of Whiteface Mountain, not Lake Placid as some outside this community may want you to believe. This town has long been known as the place where the mountain (Whiteface) and river (AuSable) meet. It’s a place to enjoy the great outdoors — hiking, skiing, mountain biking, sightseeing, fishing and swimming. Yet it’s the small-town hospitality that keeps visitors coming back year after year to enjoy this picturesque corner of New York’s Adirondack Park.

Wilmington rocks!

Starting at $1.44/week.
