LIBRARY NEWS: Library readies for book festival

A new ramp was recently installed at the Lake Placid Public Library. (Photo provided)

The Lake Placid Public Library has been busy this summer with visitors and patrons browsing all the services we have to offer.

We have received numerous compliments on the library gardens that are gleaming in vivid colors, and it is great to see many of our friends from Canada back in the area.

And the newly built ramp has been installed at the front of the library for easier access now.

With the children’s programming wrapping up for the summer, we would like to thank the presenters who came each Tuesday to share their knowledge with the many attendees. Listed below are a few reminders for upcoming events to complete this summer’s calendar.

Adirondack Family Book Festival

This event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site. It will bring together children’s and YA authors and illustrators under a big convening tent and several smaller tents to meet their readers of all ages, read aloud, and talk about their work.

A youth-led panel and activities that pair select books with the natural beauty of the farm and hands-on art making and discovery are also planned. (Rain venue: Lake Placid Middle/High School.) The festival will be free and open to all. For more information, visit the website https://adirondackfamilybookfestival.wordpress.com/2022/04/23/hello-world/.

It’s not too late to enter the poster contest sponsored by the library and The Bookstore Plus. The theme is My Adirondack Reading Chair, and the age categories are pre-K, grades K-2, grades 3-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. The contest poster template and submission forms may be printed from home, www.lakeplacidlibrary.org or picked up at the Bookstore Plus or the Lake Placid Public Library. The submissions are due Monday, Aug. 29. Good luck!

Summer Reading Log and Teen Summer Reading Bingo

It is time to turn in your completed reading log or bingo card and celebrate with a Stewart’s ice cream certificate. Thank you, Stewart’s Shops!

New StoryWalk

“Gravity” by Jason Chin will be up at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site starting on Saturday, Aug. 20. Jason Chin, winner of this year’s Caldecott Medal, is one of the many well-known children’s authors and illustrators that will be attending the Adirondack Family Book Festival that very same day. Come out and enjoy this wonderful event.

Gnome around and win a prize

Can you find the library gnomes somewhere inside the library? Come in and search, snap a picture with them and post it on our Facebook page or send it to librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org for a chance to win a prize. The drawing is Aug. 29.

Ms. Linda’s Storytime

Every Friday morning in the children’s room at 10:30, Ms. Linda is entertaining preschoolers and their parents with stories, songs and dancing. If you are a parent of a preschooler, come and enjoy a delightful morning at the library.
