Roosevelt Highway

Representatives of a large number of automobile associations are at work on plans for the building of the proposed Roosevelt scenic and memorial highway between Niagara Falls and the Adirondacks.

Meetings are being held to perfect an organization to back the project. A committee, consisting of rpresentatives from Buffalo, Rochester, Oswego, Watertown and other cities, will be appointed to draw maps of the highway, after which active steps will be taken to get the project underway.

The route will start at Niagara Falls and will run north along the George rout to Lewiston, east through Niaraga, Orleans and Monroe counties, which includes the great fruit belt of the western part of New York state to Rochester; from Rochester along the south shore of Lake Ontario to Oswego, from Oswego around the foot of the lake to Watertown, to Clayton and the Thousand Islands; from Clayton along the St. Lawrence River to Alexandria Bay to Ogdensburg; from Ogensburg to Malone and Paul Smiths, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Old Forge, Fourth Lake and Big Moose, comprising the Adirondack Park to Lake Champlain, where it will connectwith similar routes now established going south along the Hudson River to Albany and New York; north to Montreal and Quebec in Canada; east through the Green Mountains of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire and through the woods of Maine to its great summer resorts on the Atlantic coast.

All but a very small fraction of the route is now constructed with the improved macadam or concrete roads. Under the proposed national road building plans, New York state will have a maximum of 4,000 mies of road built next year and a minimum of 600 miles.

Books for soldiers

The Young Men’s Community Club will conduct a campaign for reading material, with which to furnish the American boys with the Army of the Occupation in Germany.

Official collectors have been appointed who are making a house to house canvass for books. All are urged to contribute whatever books they can for the object.

Holiday observed

According to the custom of alternating between here and Saranac Lake in observance of Memorial Day, this year finds the services being held here.

A good turnout came over from Saranac Lake in time to join the parade at 10 o’clock.

A word of praise is due the local band in supplying the music for the occasion. Despite the fact that AuSable Forks is giving a big demonstration today and a large number went from here to participate yet the band was found to be complete in number, every member remaining in order to do justice to the observance of the day here.

The music was pronounced good by all, and Mr. Joseph Beman is to be congratulated on the progress made by the organization under his leadership.

Starting at $1.44/week.
