GARDEN CLUB NEWS: It’s time to bloom in Lake Placid

Sixteen volunteers appeared on June 19, 2019 for planting/weeding Triangle Garden opposite the North Elba Show Grounds. Standing in back are Claire Thayer, Nancy Colon, Diane Collins and Charles Ballard. In the front, from left, are Linda Friedlander, Sally Urban, Jeanne Russo, Chair Paula Politi, Denise Erenstone, Marilyn Zygo, Kathie Hagner, Sally McKeen and Barbara Friend (restraining Ducky). As of this writing, my snow measuring yard stick inserted into the snow on my deck reads 12 inches. What could possibly be going on in the soil underneath?

A LOT! So many things are bending and stretching under our soil getting ready to activate growth. It is a good feeling to know that perennials, shrubs and trees are all practicing for a spring performance. Right in line with all the above is our opening Garden Club of Lake Placid meeting which was scheduled for lovely Mirror Lake Inn, Wednesday, April 29.

Unfortunately, that meeting has to be canceled. What is going on under the soil is often unaffected by what is going on above it. Same is true for our garden club. We will try to be as active as we can. Check out the details of all our events on our website: www.gardencluboflakeplacid.org. We will preceed on a month to month basis as we progress through this pandemic.

Under the calendar tab, see all the planning and scheduling the program committee has booked for us. Activities include, but are not limited to, highway and village clean up, Elderwood at Uihlein workshops with residents, Triangle Garden maintenance, parade, Herstory (role of women in farming, food and flowers), local green thumb awards, designing holiday floral arrangements and making holiday swags of greens for village decorating.

We will also tour a Lake Placid lake property and Eagle Island Camp on Upper Saranac Lake. A wild edibles walk is yet another date.

I’d like to introduce Joan Barton, a new acquaintance I made through our club. Below follows a brief interview with her.

Dot: When did you join this Garden Club, Joan?

Joan: I joined about two years ago when my husband and I moved here full time.

D: Why this club?

J: We have been coming to the Adirondacks with our children for years and fell in love with this area. We decided to retire here and I wanted to give back to the environs by helping to clean up the highways and public gardens and of course meet new people and make new friends with similar interests.

D: How did you find out about the Garden Club?

J: I read an article about the Club in the Lake Placid News. I read about designing floral arrangements which I always wanted to learn more about and perhaps other information on gardening.

D: Now that you are an active member of the Garden Club, what do you like most about it?

J: I really like all the gatherings and meetings. I met so many kind and informed people. I also like the events from picking up roadways and maintaining public gardens to lectures and environmental speakers. I also enjoy the professional floral arrangement tips and garden tours.

D: Would you recommend it to a friend and why?

J: Without a doubt I would recommend this Club to a friend. There are so many activities to choose from it is impossible to do everything. For sure there is something for everyone!

I am hoping readers will be encouraged to join or renew their memberships. You might meet someone as wonderful as Joan. In fact you will meet Joan along with many others.

This column will appear monthly until December to highlight our pursuits.
