What a great Olympic 40th Anniversary Celebration we had this past month. Even though February seemed to be a short month there was a lot going on here at the Lake Placid Public Library.

The meet-and-greet with Olympic speedskating medalist Dan Jansen on Saturday, Feb. 22, along with Olympic crafts and games in the children’s room, was enjoyed by the many friends who came through the door.

From my front desk position, I was amazed at the response from the visitors who experienced this wonderful event. One family’s remark says it all, “What a fun-filled morning we have had. We thank you for having this special day.”

AARP tax help

March is the last month that the volunteers from the AARP will be here at the library, filing returns for many people at no cost. If you or anyone you know is in need of help preparing their returns and filing them, have them call the library at 518-523-3200 and set up an appointment. What a wonderful service these volunteers give to this community. Thank you!

Homeschool Thursday

We would like to announce the start of a new program at the library. Homeschool Thursday is on the first and last Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in the children’s room. In our first session, the group had a scavenger hunt followed by a brainstorming session where the group chose exploring flight and creating flying toys for their next session. This program is for families with children K-6

Any questions? Please contact Bambi Pedu or Karen Armstrong at 518-523-3200 or librarian@lakeplacid.org.

Children’s room

We hope everyone is ready for the second annual Dinosaur Day at the LPPL on Friday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to noon in the children’s room.

Mrs. Armstrong has mixed in some new and exciting additions to this year’s celebration. So all you dinosaur fans out there, grab your kiddies or a parent and come on let’s have a stomping time.

Reminder to all pre-k to grade 5 students, there is no school for LPCSD that day. This program is free and open to the public.

Story time with Ms. Linda

A couple of weeks ago, Ms. Linda’s story was about Valentine’s Day cards. The story tells of a child looking for the right valentine but gets to the bookstore a little late and the only one that was left had been on the floor, stepped on and sad. The story ends with two smiles, one on the valentine and one on the child. The children sang songs and colored pictures of hearts of course. Story time is every Friday morning at 10:15.

Math tutoring

Struggling with math? The library offers free math tutoring sessions for any student in grades 6 to 12. Chris Ward is available by appointment only. For more information, inquire at the front desk or call the library at 518-523-3200. This program is made available thanks to the Lake Placid Education Foundation Technology and Education Grant.

Census time

In early March, everyone will receive a notice in the mail requesting your census responses. You may respond online or via telephone. If you do not have access to the internet, the LPPL will have two computers dedicated to the census along with personnel to assist. Or you can respond via IVR (interactive voice response / phone) or wait for a paper form. Paper questionnaires will be mailed as a followup to digital-first households that do not respond online within about a month. If households do not respond by any of these means within six weeks, the Bureau will send a representative to your home to collect your data. The online questionnaire is available in 12 non-English languages. Only one person per household is required to respond.

Adventure club

Homework/Adventure Club for grades 3-5 is on Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in the children’s room. They complete any assigned homework, but spend the majority of club time engaged in a variety of STEAM projects based on student interests. Permission required prior to first day of attendance. If anyone has any questions about the club, please call the library at 518-523-3200 or email librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org.

Knitting group

Every Tuesday from 6:45 to 9 p.m., a group of knitters meet and share their talents and skills with each other. They are always looking for new members, so if you are interested please call Jennifer Newhart at 518-354-3246 or Heidi Roland at 518-524-6151.

Spring break

Spring is just around the corner, and many will be traveling in all directions and all types of climates. For those of you who are staying in town, come and see us at the library. Mrs. Armstrong will be in the children’s room from 1:15 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, always offering great book selections as well as creative activities to participate in. Story time with Ms. Linda is Fridays at 10:15 a.m. Come and enjoy the stories, songs and dance each Friday with us.

If you are looking to just relax, this is just the place to come. Choose a magazine, newspaper or book and sit on the reading porch, looking out on the beautiful lake and fantasize about being at the ocean.

Starting at $1.44/week.
