LIBRARY NEWS: Library to welcome Olympic speedskater Dan Jansen on Feb. 22

AARP volunteer greeters Betsy Senkowski, Barb Erikson and Janet Smith set up appointments and welcome the many people who have signed up to have help with their tax filing. (Photo provided)

It is the middle of the winter and the Lake Placid Public Library still has plenty going on, especially with tax time upon us and the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Winter Olympics coming this month.

Free tax help, AARP

The AARP volunteers are here and are all ready to complete and e-file forms for local taxpayers. The volunteers attended the sessions in Albany to be updated on changes to the tax laws and recertified by the IRS. The service is completely free and there are no age or income requirements. To make an appointment call the library at 518-523-3200. Someone will take your name and an AARP representative will return your call to set up a time and tell you what documents to bring.

Celebrate with Dan Jansen

Reminder to all, come and meet U.S. Olympic speedskating gold medalist Dan Jansen from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 22 at the library. There will be Olympic-themed crafts and games in the children’s room. This event is free and open to the public. Meet Dan, get an autograph, and then have some Olympic-themed fun in the children’s room. Later in the day, he will be appearing at the High Peaks Resort at 7 p.m. to present a speech and hold a meet-and-greet afterward.

Story time with Ms. Linda

Every Friday at 10:15 Ms. Linda shares stories, songs and dancing with little children and their parents. Fairy tales and nursery rhymes never get old when Ms. Linda takes out her felt board characters and weaves her versions of these favorite children stories. She always ends the morning with a fun activity.

Math tutoring

Struggling with math? The library offers free math tutoring sessions for any student in grades 6-12. Chris Ward is available by appointment only. For more information, inquire at the front desk or call the library at 518-523-3200. This program is made available thanks to the Lake Placid Education Foundation Technology and Education Grant.

Children’s room

The library is looking forward to its second annual Dinosaur Day on Friday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be crafts, games, prizes, books, and enough fun to make a T-Rex smile! This event is for families with children in Pre-k to grade 5. Be sure to mark your calendar. Free and open to the public.

Note: There is no school for LPCSD students that day. Any questions, contact librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org or 518-523-3200.

Census time

Why is the census so important? The government is required to count the number of people living in the U.S. every 10 years.

Getting an accurate account is important for two major reasons: the census determines where the billions of dollars in federal funds is distributed. The state uses the census data in order to allocate funding for roads, hospitals, schools and even libraries. The census also determines the number of seats the state has in the House of Representatives.

In early March, everyone will receive a notice in the mail requesting census responses. You may respond online or via telephone. If you do not have access to the internet, the library will have two computers dedicated to the census along with personnel to assist. Or you can respond via IVR (Interactive Voice response / phone) or wait for a paper form.

Paper questionnaires will be mailed as a followup to digital-first households that do not respond online within about a month. If households do not respond by any of these means within six weeks, the Census Bureau will send a representative to your home to collect your data. The online questionnaire is available in 12 non-English languages. Only one person per household is required to respond.

Knitting group

Every Tuesday from 6:45 to 9 p.m. a group of knitters meet and share their talents and skills with each other. They are always looking for new members, so if you are interested please call Jennifer Newhart at 518-354-3246 or Heidi Roland at 518-524-6151.
