BLUE BOMBER VOICES: Lake Placid After School Program

The Lake Placid After School Program, also known as the Lake Placid Child Care Committee, is a non for profit, after school program that benefits the children of the Lake Placid Elementary School.

The program started in 1989 when a group of local, working moms recognized the need to have a safe and educational environment for their children from the hours of 3-5:30 p.m., while they worked.

This successful program has been the only North Country after school program to continue to thrive in a challenging economy, thanks in part to continued support by the school, its administration and staff, the community and elementary school families.

The programs focus is to educate through meaningful and physical activities.

These activities include a structured homework time where students get support from staff, middle/high school mentors and their teachers; field trips, in house demos, arts and crafts, and organized sports. Many of the great in house demos come from staff at the Lake Placid High School.

Art Teacher Sandy Huber has worked with our program to show children how to make different pieces of pottery. Recently, students were able to visit high school science teacher Frank Brunner.

We are frequently able to take the children on field trips around the area. Some of the trips we have been able to take include: Apple picking at Apple Jacks; Corn Maze at Tucker Farms; swimming at NCCC; ice skating; tobogganing; tubing; trips to the Wild Center; movies; bowling; and hiking. Many activities we are able to bring to the school to engage students in a variety of interests. The After School Program regularly does science experiments, arts and crafts, baking and sewing.

We do several fundraisers to offset the cost of the activities we do. One of our most popular events is Touch-A-Truck. Each may we bring in approximately 50 vehicles for kids of all ages to explore, sit in and pretend to drive.

This Saturday, Nov. 1, is our 6th Annual Pancake Breakfast. The breakfast runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at the LPES cafeteria.

The program is available to any elementary student, grades K-5. If you’d like more information on the program or would like to volunteer, please contact program director Kristen Boslet at the Lake Placid Elementary School.

Starting at $1.44/week.
