Schulte’s Family Lodge property has a long history

(Editor’s note: The former Schulte’s Family Lodge on state Route 73 in Lake Placid is now being renovated by Peter Holderied. It had been sitting vacant for almost three years and has a long history as a lodging destination — dating from 1948 to 2018.)

In 1948, there was a small motel with cabins for rent. It was called Taylor’s Cabins. Each cabin was very well built and was equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, one or two bedrooms and a screened in porch. There was a large flower garden in the middle of the property, too.

From 1960 to 1971, the property was called Hurley’s motel. More summer cabins were built, and Paul and Eva Hurley put in a large swimming pool where there was once a garden. They also upgraded the cabins, and it was a great spot for families to stay when in Lake Placid.

From 1971to 2018, the property was known as Schulte’s Family Lodge.

Rolf and Birgit Schulte bought Hurley’s motel and added heat to the cabins for year-round vacations.

They heard the news about the Olympic Winter Games coming to Lake Placid in 1980, so they also built two motel buildings. Both had eight large rooms with views of Whiteface Mountain. They also built a restaurant (for the Olympics) in the main building, which served continental breakfast after the Olympics ended.

Soon the motel became a favorite for families and sports groups that came back year after year, until the property was sold in 2018 to Peter Holderied, co-owner of the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort on Main Street.

Peter removed the pool and the cabins, but he kept the two main buildings to convert into affordable housing for the residents/workers in Lake Placid. It is a great use for this property. Now in 2021, a new venture for the property begins!
