Gustav (Gus) Schmidt

Gus Schmidt, 95, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2021 in Florham Park, New York, after a short illness.

His connection to Lake Placid began in 1962 when he became the director of all children’s programs at the Lake Placid Club. He spent many nights sleeping in the Club woods with the campers, swimming and boating with them on Mirror Lake, and enjoying the facilities there.

As the years progressed he also headed up some children’s programs there in the spring and winter and enjoyed cross-country skiing on the Club golf course with Jewel and his children.

After deciding to end his time at the Club in 1974, he led a full life traveling around the world and visiting all 50 states with his beloved wife Jewel and continued playing tennis until well into his 80s.

He always spoke of the fun he had in Lake Placid and how much he enjoyed his time there with the children (and their parents) that he met there.

He is survived by his daughter Barbara Schmidt-Kemp; son Ronald Schmidt; son-in-law Christopher Kemp; daughter-in-law Millie St. John Schmidt; granddaughters Pamela Kemp, Meghan Kemp Nocito (Nick Nocito), Katherine Schmidt (great-grandson Hudson Hart), Jessica LaFave (Chris LaFave), Amy St. John and great-grandson K’ay St. John.

Starting at $1.44/week.
