Northern Lights Choir winter concert is Dec. 12
SARANAC LAKE — The Northern Lights Choir is pleased to announce that its 11th annual winter concert will be held on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake.
Helen Demong, the choir’s founder and Artistic Director, has compiled a stunning array of choral compositions and Christmas classics that is sure to captivate audiences of all ages with a program designed to warm the heart, soothe the soul, and fill the spirit with the joy of the holiday season.
One highlight of this season’s concert is a piece by Norwegian composer Ola Gjello, who set the William Butler Yeats poem, “The Lake Isle of Innesfree” to music in a mesmerising choral arrangement accompanied by a string quartet, acoustic guitar, and classical piano.
The classic contemporary Christmas song, “River” by Joni Mitchell, will be sung by the women in a gorgeous arrangement by Joel Tranquilla, originally performed by the women of the Canadian Chamber Choir in December 2024. This re-imaging of “River” will sound familiar yet new, and just may leave you breathless.
The men will also perform a piece by a modern artist. “You are the Reason” by Colum Scott and arranged in 5-part harmony will delight the audience as the resonance of the choir’s male singers bring this moving composition to a new life.
Another arresting performance will no doubt be “Gabriel’s Oboe, the theme song from the cult classic, “The Mission”. Widely considered one of the most unforgettable pieces ever written for the oboe, choral voices take the place of the orchestra in this breathtaking arrangement.
With 85 members, the Northern Lights Choir is the largest choral ensemble in the North Country. The inclusion of students from Paul Smiths College and North Country Community College makes this choir a truly powerful, multi-generational ensemble.
The Northern Lights Choir Winter Concert is usually a sell-out affair, so mark your calendars.
Suggested Donation for tickets at the door is $15.
