Fatal crash in Notch remains under investigation

LAKE PLACID — State Police continue to investigate a fatal single-vehicle motorcycle crash that occurred on Friday, Sept. 27.

The crash was reported at 11:50 a.m., according to a press release from State Police. The crash occurred along state Route 86 between Lake Placid and Wilmington, a stretch of highway colloquially referred to as the Wilmington Notch. While an exact location was not provided, State Police said the crash occurred within the town of North Elba, which comprises the southern area of the Notch.

The motorcycle was being driven by Alec J. Ricci, 27, of Rochester, who State Police said was traveling north, or away from Lake Placid, when he failed to negotiate a turn, resulting in his ejection from the motorcycle.

Ricci was pronounced dead on the scene, according to State Police.

An obituary for Ricci was posted on the Willard H. Scott Funeral Home’s website.

It said that Ricci, who worked as a welder and fabricator, died doing what he loved in the company of his best friend. The obituary added that Lake Placid “was one of his most cherished places.”

He “loved fishing, boating, camping, snowboarding and motorcycling,” and had a lot of talent for cooking, according to the obituary. Ricci is survived by his parents, two siblings, maternal grandmother as well as several other family members and friends.

No further details on the cause of the accident were provided, with State Police noting that the investigation remains ongoing.

The crash led to the closure of both lanes of traffic between Lake Placid and Wilmington until 5:15 p.m. Friday, according to State Police spokeswoman Brandi Ashley.
