FISU curling finals set for today, Saturday

SARANAC LAKE — China and the Republic of Korea will play in the gold-medal match for women’s curling at the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Winter World University Games after both teams defeated their opponents Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.

China edged the U.S. squad 6 to 5, while Korea beat Great Britain 10 to 4.

The U.S. and Great Britain will face off at 2 p.m. Friday in the bronze-medal match. The U.S. won their only FISU match against Great Britain on Tuesday by a score of 7 to 3.

Playing Thursday on the American team were Anne O’Hara, of Minnesota State University, Mankato; Sydney Mullaney, of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; Rebecca Rodgers, of the University of Wisconsin, Eu Claire; and Delaney Strouse, of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

– Korea: Seungyoun Ha, Hyerin Kim, Taei Yang and Sujin Kim.

China and Korea will play in the finals at 7 p.m. Saturday. Korea beat China 8 to 6 in their only FISU match on Wednesday.

The U.S. men’s curling team beat Switzerland Thursday 6 to 3, securing a place in the gold-medal game against the curlers from Great Britain, who won their match Thursday against Canada by a score of 6 to 4.

Playing for the U.S. men’s team on Thursday were Danny Casper, of the University of Minnesota; Luc Violette, of Edmonds College; Benjamin Richardson, of the Minneapolis Community & Technical College; and Chase Sinnett of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Canada will play Switzerland for the bronze medal at 7 p.m. Friday, while the U.S. will play Great Britain at 2 p.m. Saturday for the gold medal.
