Over 400 parking passes approved for FISU Games

LAKE PLACID — More than 400 Lake Placid residents and business owners can expect to see a Lake Placid Parking Pass in their mailbox just before the 2023 FISU Games begin in January.

A Lake Placid Parking Pass will be required to access road closures on Main Street and surrounding areas for the duration of the Games, which will be held in this village from Jan. 12 to 22.

Jon Lundin — the head of communications and media for the Games’ local organizing committee, Lake Placid 2023 — said that more than 460 people applied for the passes during the around two-week application period earlier this month. He said 44 applications weren’t approved, either because the application was incomplete or because the applicant didn’t live on Main Street or another restricted area.

Lundin said that Lake Placid 2023 expects to receive the printed parking passes in the mail by Jan. 5 or 6, and he said the committee will immediately start mailing the passes to the residents. That would give the committee less than a week to issue the passes before the Games begin.

During the Games, the village of Lake Placid will restrict access to Main Street, requiring a special parking permit to access the closed-off section between 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 to 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23. This restricted window will be in place between the intersection of Main Street and Saranac Avenue to the north, and state Route 86 and mile post marker 86-1202-1089 to the south (the southernmost driveway of the Grand Adirondack Hotel). On the southernmost portion of Main Street, businesses and residents located between Mirror Lake Drive and Cummings Road, and between Parkside Drive and the Grand Adirondack Hotel will also require a permit to allow access.

Information session

The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism on Thursday, Jan. 5 is hosting another informational session about transportation during the Games for local residents and business owners who have questions about parking passes, shuttling, closures and other traffic-related topics.

This will be the final installment in a three-part information session series about the Games held by ROOST, local law enforcement and Lake Placid 2023. ROOST Chief Operating Officer Mary Jane Lawrence said the meetings are a way for Games organizers and ROOST to keep people in the loop and “close any information gaps.”

Lawrence said that ROOST is putting together a list of frequently asked local questions about the Games, and she hopes the list could be released this week. A map of Main Street closures is also expected to be available by the information session, Lawrence said.

The session will be held in the North Elba Town Hall first-floor meeting room at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 5. The meeting will be held in person only.

While the last two FISU informational sessions have been recorded and sent out to ROOST’s email subscriber list several days after, Lawrence said the upcoming session will likely be summarized in a document and sent out to subscribers to get the information out faster. People can sign up for ROOST’s email list, which Lawrence said will also be used to send out information to locals during the Games, at roostadk.com.

Starting at $1.44/week.
