Celebrate summer, Fourth of July in the Olympic Region

LAKE PLACID — Summer is in full swing in New York’s Olympic village, and this community is ready to entertain residents and visitors for the Fourth of July weekend … and all summer long.

– The municipal beach on Mirror Lake is now open from 9:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. daily.

– High Peaks Cyclery held its first mini-triathlon of the season on Monday, June 27. These races will be held at the Mirror Lake boat launch area Monday evenings (5:30 p.m. registration, 6:30 p.m. race start) until Aug. 15; however, July 4 will have a special morning mini-triathlon (7:30 a.m. registration, 8:30 a.m. race start). Races feature a 400-yard swim, 12-mile bike and 3-mile run.

– The History Museum at the train station, operated by the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society, unveiled a new exhibit on the Northville-Placid Trail’s centennial on Thursday, June 23. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday until Oct. 9.

– The Songs at Mirror Lake Music Series began the season on Tuesday, June 28 with Americana Night. Concerts are held at 7 p.m. every Tuesday through Aug. 9 at Mid’s Park on Main Street. They are free and open to the public.

– The Lake Placid Horse Show began on Tuesday, June 28 and runs through Sunday, July 3 at the North Elba Show Grounds on state Route 73. It will be followed by the I Love New York Horse Show from July 5 to 10.

– The John Brown Farm State Historic Site will host a stargazing program from 9:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, July 1. A telescope will be available, but visitors are welcome to bring their own telescope or binoculars. It will be held in the north field adjacent to the north field parking lot near the park entrance. If the sky is overcast, this event will be canceled. It is free and open to the public.

– The state Olympic Regional Development Authority will host a Star-Spangled Ski Jumping event Saturday, July 2

at the Olympic Jumping Complex. Activities include: DJ and family-friendly activities from noon to 3 p.m.; a ski jumping competition on the HS 100 meter hill from 1 to 2 p.m.; and athlete training on the HS 20-meter, HS 100-meter and HS-128 meter hills from 2 to 3 p.m. The entry fee is $20 for adults and teens 13 and older, $15 for juniors ages 7 to 12 and seniors 65 and older, and free for children ages 6 and under. The entry fee includes access to the Skyride Experience. Visitors can also experience the Sky Flyer for an additional fee. – The Lake Placid Sinfonietta will begin its season at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 6 at Mid’s Park with a free concert. The Wednesday Park Series runs through Aug. 10. The orchestra will begin its Symphony Series at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10 at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts; that series runs through Aug. 14.

– Other local attractions include the state Olympic Regional Development Authority venues (Olympic Center, Olympic Jumping Complex, Whiteface Mountain Ski Center, Whiteface Mountain Veterans’ Memorial Highway in Wilmington and Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg), Lake Placid Center for the Arts, Ausable Chasm, and High Falls Gorge and Santa’s Workshop in Wilmington.

– Lake Placid’s Fourth of July parade will begin at 5 p.m. at the post office and run up Main Street to Saranac Avenue. From 4 to 5 p.m., there will be pre-parade entertainment at Mid’s Park with free American flags. Central Garage is again sponsoring the children’s bicycle entry. All kids who want to be in the parade are encouraged to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, wagons, etc. and take part. Central Garage will give each kid a prize.

– The Fourth of July evening ends with the 34th annual Set the Night to Music fireworks display over Mirror Lake, starting at 9:30 p.m. Tune into the local radio stations to hear the music while the fireworks go off: Lake FM, 100.7-FM and 102.1-FM; and Adirondack 105, 95.3-FM and 105.5-FM.
