Absentees could sway Jay supervisor, council races

Carol Greenley-Hackel was elected Jay’s town clerk, but the town supervisor and town council races are still too close to call.

Greenley-Hackel received 518 votes during the early voting period and on Election Day, a 374-vote lead over Tom Matuszewski’s 144 votes. Greenley-Hackel has served as clerk to the Jay supervisor, and she’s been Jay’s deputy town clerk for 16 years.

The Essex County Board of Elections sent out 70 absentee ballots to voters in Jay. The ballots returned won’t be counted for another few days. The absentee ballots would not sway the election results for town clerk, but could change the leading candidates for town supervisor and town council.

With 329 votes between ballots cast early and on Election Day, town supervisor candidate Matthew Stanley has a 66-vote lead over opponent Garth Rogers, who has 263 votes. Rogers would need to garner almost all of the absentee votes, if all the ballots are returned, to secure a win.

Town council candidates Knut Sauer, Stephen Forbes and Olivia Dwyer are vying for the two open town council seats. They received 369 votes, 351 votes and 333 votes, respectively. Absentee ballot numbers could change that order.

Town council candidates Jody Hart, with 214 votes, and Wayne Frederick, with 172 votes, are out of the running.

Tax collector Lori Ducharme and highway superintendent Kevin Lincoln ran unopposed. Ducharme received 526 votes and Lincoln won 638 votes.
