Main Street reconstruction begins again in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID — The Main Street reconstruction project continued in earnest on Monday, Sept. 13 after taking the summer off from the road work, even though some projects continued in parking lots.

That means Main Street is a one-way thoroughfare again — going north from the post office toward Saranac Avenue — having been a two-way street in the summer due to heavier traffic. The temporary traffic light at the corner of Main Street and Olympic Drive, which was shut off during July and August, has been turned on again. The temporary traffic light at the corner of Wesvalley Road and Saranac Avenue remained active throughout the summer.

Crews began working on water connections, including laterals, tie-ins and fire hydrants, according to village officials, with specific projects that included the public restrooms in the parking lot across from the post office, the Marcy Road tie-in and at Smoke Signals.

At the northern end of Main Street, crews began installing trench lines for surface water drainage on the west (hill) side, starting near the intersection of Saranac Avenue and Main Street toward the Palace Theatre.

Businesses are still open daily. Parking will be limited in the direct work area. As crews move, parking will be restored. Parking is available on both sides of the street; remember to park with the direction of traffic. Delivery zones may be moved as work areas move.

Hillcrest Avenue, which was one way southbound to the Crowne Plaza on Olympic Drive, is now a two-way street again.

Two-way traffic will resume on Main Street during the winter; however, the specific timeline is currently unknown, village of Lake Placid and town of North Elba Community Development Director Haley Breen said Tuesday, Sept. 14. It will depend on the weather. And one-way traffic is expected to resume in the spring when work continues.

Information about the Main Street upgrade, including an interactive map of the detours, can be found on the village website — http://villageoflakeplacid.ny.gov/ — under “Main Street upgrade.”
