Head-on collision leaves two dead, two hospitalized

Two people died in a head-on collision on the interstate Friday. Two others, including a 65-year-old man from Saranac Lake, were airlifted to a hospital.

New York State Police say Dennis M. Ford, of Saranac Lake, was driving a 2017 Mini Countryman north in the southbound lane on I-87 outside of Chestertown, Warren County, on Friday evening. He collided head-on with a Volvo XC70 heading south that had three people inside.

State Police responded to the scene at 10:30 p.m.

The driver of the Volvo, who was in critical condition, was airlifted to UVM Medical Center in Burlington, according to State Police. The two other passengers of the car were pronounced dead on scene. State Police had not yet identified anyone in the Volvo by Sunday morning. State Police were notifying the families of the deceased.

Ford was airlifted to a hospital and he’s in fair condition, according to State Police.

State Police are still investigating the collision.
