WILMINGTON — Wilmington’s new farmers market is held the same day, and almost at the same time, as the one in Lake Placid, yet it’s already attracted nine vendors and counting, according to organizer Michelle Preston, operations manager at the Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau.

“We’ve been wanting to have one here, but it’s always been a struggle because there’s so many in the area trying to find farmers that aren’t already committed to other markets,” Preston said. “And we finally found a couple that were available.”

The Wilmington farmers market launched on Aug. 11 and will be held through the end of September, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Heritage Park next to the visitors bureau and the Riverside Thrift Store, operated by volunteers from the Whiteface Community United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays. The Lake Placid farmers market is held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays at the Green Goddess Natural Market parking lot on Saranac Avenue.

“We specifically picked Wednesdays because that’s the same day that the thrift shop is open, and there’s a lot of traffic at the thrift shop on Wednesdays,” Preston said.

The goal is to establish the farmers market at Heritage Park and move to the Preston Festival Field next year once it grows bigger.

“By then, we’ll have the bathrooms built over there,” Preston said.

Vendors at the Wilmington farmers market sell a variety of items, from fruits and vegetables, to jewelry, honey, maple syrup and more. Starting on Sept. 1, select vendors began accepting senior and WIC nutrition program coupons.

Other nearby farmers markets include the ones in Elizabethtown on Friday, Saranac Lake on Saturday and Keene on Sunday.

Starting at $1.44/week.
