Governor takes ‘Lake Saranac’ fishing trip
SARANAC LAKE — Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited Saranac Lake on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The governor, who has vacationed in the Adirondacks many times, spent the day fishing with one of his three daughters, Cara, on one of the three Saranac lakes, Cuomo’s office confirmed Monday, Oct. 12. Staff didn’t specify which one: Lower, Middle or Upper.
A photo of Cuomo holding a fish was posted on his official social media accounts on Saturday with the caption: “You should see the one that got away. Perfect day fishing on Lake Saranac with Cara. I (heart) New York.”
Cuomo’s social media post was met with ribbing and derision from some locals, who commented on the governor’s use of “Lake Saranac” instead of “Saranac Lake.”
It’s unclear how long the governor was in Saranac Lake and what else he may have done while he was visiting.
Cuomo’s love of the Adirondacks has been well documented over the years.
In 2011 and 2012, he was frequently sighted in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. Under his administration the Adirondack Challenge was created, a promotional event that brought hundreds of elected officials and visitors to the North Country every year to participate in recreational activities like flatwater paddling and whitewater rafting. In the first year of the Adirondack Challenge in 2013, Cuomo’s team beat out then-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s team by 18 seconds in a whitewater rafting race in Indian Lake. Last year, the state hosted the I Love NY Adirondack Oktoberfest, an Adirondack Challenge-style event that took place in the Tri-Lakes region.
The last time Cuomo made an official visit to the Tri-Lakes was in February, when he held a press conference at the Hotel Saranac to announce a new state marketing effort designed to entice out-of-state snowmobilers to try out New York’s snowmobile trail networks.
Cuomo has vacationed in the Adirondacks for years. According to the New York Times, he first visited the area as a teenager with his brother, Chris Cuomo, a reporter who currently headlines “Cuomo Prime Time” on CNN.
