Preview of this week’s Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID – In this week’s Lake Placid News, we continue to honor members of our military with Veterans Day tributes.

On the front page, Editor Andy Flynn wraps up an exhaustive research project after trying to find out why the name of one Lake Placid soldier from World War I did not make it onto the village’s Benson Memorial at the Adirondack Community Church. In 1929, the World War I memorial was dedication to the eight Lake Placid soldiers who died during the war; however, we found a ninth name in our research.

We also have coverage of the Veterans Day commemoration at the American Legion Post 326 on Sunday, Nov. 11.

The town of North Elba has been busy. Town board members passed their 2019 spending plan and announced that the old Lake Placid hospital will become a new “Center for Sports Excellence.” They also set hearings on new laws for septic tanks and condemning buildings, and they increased the rates at the town transfer station.

The state Olympic Regional Development Authority continues to make snow at its venues and is preparing to open the nordic ski center at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Saturday, Nov. 17 and the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center on Friday, Nov. 23.

For this week’s Artist Profile, Arts Correspondent Steve Lester recently spoke with Jessica Winona Mulvey, who makes jewelry with porcupine quills.

In other news from around the region, the Adirondack Sky Center in Tupper Lake received major grants, a court has approved Tops restructuring plan for local stores, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg bishop named more North Country priests accused of abuse, and the United Way says 40 percent of local households struggle with money.

Don’t forget to read columns by Naj Wikoff (On the Scene), who reports on the Youth Climate Summit recently held in Tupper Lake, and Martha Allen (Martha Sez), who has her own take on Daylight Saving Time.

SPORTS

The Lake Placid boys and girls cross country teams were in full force Saturday, Nov. 10 at the state championship meet at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island. Lake Placid News sports reporter Justin Levine provides a full report on how the Blue Bombers fared in the meet.

Also on this week’s Olympic Region Sports pages, readers will find a story and photo from the International Children’s Games flag raising ceremony, as well as reports from the bobsled and skeleton teams’ first North American Cup races.

OUTDOORS

Adirondack Expeditions writer Justin Levine has done it again. He found another short hike that can be done by a wide range of people without much risk or time commitment. Baxter Mountain rises above the town of Keene and offers spectacular views of the mountains and valley in the area.
