Editor Andy Flynn has another installment from North Country Public Radio’s North Country at Work Project, recently visiting the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid to speak with bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor. She has won three Olympic medals, a bronze in 2010 and silvers in 2014 and 2018. Meyers Taylor talks about training, her sleds and what it takes to win an Olympic medal.

We have an update from the 2019 International Children’s Games, which will be held Jan. 6-11 in Lake Placid. The official ICG flag was raised at the North Elba Town Hall Wednesday, Nov. 7 as organizers introduced members of Lake Placid’s 75-member team. Since the flag raising was held on the News deadline, we were only able to share a photo and small amount of information from the event. A full report will be printed in next week’s News.

Veterans Day is Sunday, Nov. 11, and there will be services held in Lake Placid at American Legion Post 326 on Sunday and at the Keene war memorials on Monday. Check out the preview in this week’s News for specifics.

Staff Writer Griffin Kelly was busy with a couple of exclusive stories this week.

On Thursday, Nov. 1, he stopped by the Adirondack Community Church for this month’s Giving Back feature. He interviewed volunteers, such as Zach Clark, who were preparing the weekend’s winter clothing and boot giveaway for families who need a little extra help.

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Griffin stopped by American Legion Post 326 to interview post historian Bill Morris about his service in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1960s and his work with the legion. That’s this week’s Up Close feature.

In other news, we have election coverage from the state and federal elections on Tuesday; a preview of Pendragon Theatre’s newest play; and a report from the Wilmington Youth Center’s haunted house on Halloween. Plus, we recently learned that the Veterans Memorial Highway in Wilmington, which allows people to drive nearly to the summit of Whiteface Mountain, will be plowed through the winter as work on the summit elevator continues for a second year. That means no skiing on the toll road, which is an annual challenge for many nordic skiers.

Outdoors Writer Justin A. Levine managed to find another remote location that many locals and visitors may have never heard of. Both ponds are within easy walking distance and worth checking out.

Adirondack Council conducted a survey of hikers in the High Peaks Wilderness Area. The findings are revealed on this week’s Adirondack Expeditions page.
