SAVOR THE SEASON: NY remains an agricultural powerhouse in certain sectors

Even though it’s ranked the 27th agricultural producing state in America, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, New York remains a leading producer of food in the country.

In 2017, the top 10 agricultural producing states, as far as cash receipts, in descending order, were California, Iowa, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Indiana.

Although New York only represented 1.4 percent of the cash receipts for agricultural products – which is not impressive compared to California’s 13.4 percent – New York starts to look more impressive when considering the state rankings for particular commodities.

As of 2017, New York’s national ranking for farm products, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, are listed below.

1. Yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese

2. Cabbage, apples, maple syrup

3. Corn silage, milk from cows, butter, total Italian cheese, ice cream (hard)

4. Pears, tart cherries, grapes, total cheese

5. Sweet corn (processing), squash

6. Carrots (processing), strawberries, green peas (fresh), green peas (processing), ice cream (mix)

7. Sweet corn (fresh market)

8. Sweet cherries, carrots (fresh market), onions, pumpkins, peaches, honey.

New York’s top 10 agricultural products, according to the New York Farm Bureau, are:

1. Milk

2. Corn for grain

3. Hay

4. Cattle and calves

5. Apples

6. Floriculture

7. Cabbage

8. Sweet corn

9. Potatoes

10. Tomatoes

New York had about 35,500 farm operators on 7.2 million acres of farmland in 2017, according to the USDA.
