Motorcycle-deer collision kills woman in Westport

A woman died Saturday when the motorcycle she was riding on collided with a deer in Westport.

Amy Raimo, 52, of Ballston Spa was riding on the back of a motorcycle driven by Wayne Flores, 54, of Warrensburg, according to Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw. He said the two were southbound on state Route 22 when they came upon the deer in the road at 6:20 p.m. Flores tried to avoid it but couldn’t, and the motorcycle hit the animal, ejecting both riders.

Raimo suffered head trauma and was unresponsive at the scene, and Flores had shoulder injuries, according to Whitelaw. Both were taken to Elizabethtown Community Hospital, where Raimo died. Flores was transferred to Albany Medical Center, Whitelaw said.

“Watch out for the deer, because they are proliferating and they are everywhere,” Whitelaw said.

State police confirmed basic facts of the fatal collision, including Raimo’s identity, to the Post-Star newspaper of Glens Falls, but they did not release any more details Monday afternoon.

The Post-Star reported that Raimo had worked in public relations for a number of local companies, including Saratoga Hospital and Six Flags Great Escape. Most recently, she had worked as vice president of community engagement for Saratoga Hospital’s Foundation.

“Her efforts have touched every program and service we offer, every patient and every family we have taken care of since she joined us just a few years ago – we are a better hospital because of her,” the foundation posted on its Facebook page.
