LAKE PLACID – With Summit Lacrosse Ventures bringing four events to Lake Placid this summer, the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism – the region’s destination marketing organization – has estimated that direct spending in Lake Placid over that time will exceed $8 million.

“Lacrosse has been part of the fabric of this village for nearly 30 years,” said James McKenna, president of ROOST. “We have seen the Summit Classic grow from just a few teams in the early years, to now, a weeklong event that brings 8,000 here for a week. And that’s just one of four separate events.”

The tournaments began this past weekend with the High Peaks Summit Classic. This tournament was started in recent years as a means of satisfying the overflow demand to enter the mid-summer event. It featured 926 athletes, family members, coaches and sponsors. The two-day competition will approach $350,000 in direct spending to Lake Placid.

This was followed immediately by the Lake Placid Summit Youth Classic on June 25-27, with 3,288 event “family members” coming to Lake Placid spending over $1 million.

The Northstar Invitational, from July 23-26, is a combine and will include 595 top female high school lacrosse players in the nation. This four-day event will bring these young women great exposure to college coaches, while dropping well over $250, 000 in the business community.

The seven-day Lake Placid Summit Classic, will return for its 29th year from July 30 to Aug. 5. It will debut Summit 7s in the midst of the action on Aug. 1-2. All told, this two-in-one presentation will welcome more than 9,000 participants, equating to over $6 million in direct spending.

“The signs of truly great events are those that create situations where everyone benefits,” said Ashley Gersuk Murphy, CEO of Summit Lacrosse Ventures. “We are so happy to bring this many visitors to Lake Placid. It’s been our goal to host these events to satisfy a demand for people to enjoy this sport in this community. But at the same time, it’s been important to us to see local businesses benefit as well. Looking at these numbers, both have been achieved.”
