Preview of this week’s Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID – In this week’s Lake Placid News, it’s apparent that summer is in high gear. With the end of the school year and the beginning of tourist season, we were able to cram a lot of news, sports and event previews into this issue.

Two weeks of Lake Placid Horse Shows began this week, and we have a preview on the front page. Since the Fourth of July holiday falls on a Wednesday – before our next issue – we also have a preview of the special events taking place that day in Lake Placid, including the parade, Lake Placid Sinfonietta concert and fireworks display over Mirror Lake.

As the school year draws to an end, we have coverage from the Lake Placid High School graduation, which took place on the Olympic Speedskating Oval on Friday, June 22. Where else in the world can you graduate high school at an Olympic venue?

We also say goodbye to outgoing Lake Placid school board President Mary Dietrich. Staff Writer Griffin Kelly sat down with her at the Lake Placid News office to talk about her time on the school board. Mary’s interview can be heard on this week’s “We are Lake Placid” podcast (found at the iTunes store or Soundcloud website/app).

Editor Andy Flynn stopped by The History Museum at the Lake Placid train station to take a tour of the new “Suffrage Centennial” exhibit created by the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society. He spoke with historical society director Courtney Bastian and board member Parmelee Tolkan about the exhibit, which was officially opened on Wednesday, June 27. That interview can also be heard on this week’s “We are Lake Placid” podcast.

Andy interviewed I Love BBQ and Music Festival music coordinator Gordy Sheer about this year’s concert lineup, which is now complete. The festival is being held July 6-8 at the Olympic Speedskating Oval.

In other news, we have the results from this week’s Democratic primary for the 21st congressional district, in which Tedra Cobb of Canton won. We also have updates on two construction projects: the sewer replacement on Main Street, which should wrap up this week; and Adirondack Health’s new Lake Placid Health and Medical Fitness Center on Old Military Road, which should be complete by the end of the year.

Lake Placid village board members were expecting to pass their 2018-19 spending plan on Thursday, June 28. They are also proposing an amendment to current code regulations regarding sandwich board A-frame signs in the Village Center and Gateway Corridor zoning districts.

And the Lake Placid Central School District has been trying to install new camera security systems in both the elementary and middle-high schools.

In addition to columns from Naj Wikoff (On the Scene) and Martha Allen (Martha Sez), we have updates from the Lake Placid Public Library, Garden Club of Lake Placid and North Country SPCA.

SPORTS

The sidelines of Lake Placid High School softball and volleyball games will be a little different next year after longtime athletic director, teacher and coach Donna Moody has retired after 31 years of service. She looks back fondly on her time at the school in this week’s sports section.

With the Lake Placid Horse Show getting underway this week at the North Elba Show Grounds, Lake Placid News reporter Justin A. Levine went behind the scenes with a boot maker who has made a name for himself with quality craftsmanship.

Also on the sports pages this week, correspondent Christie Sausa recaps the adult figure skating camp that came through town last week.

OUTDOORS

For this week’s outdoors column, Justin A. Levine took off in a fog and finished in bright sunshine during a canoe trip in the Osgood Pond area. The trip included a pass by White Pine Camp, which was once visited by Calvin Coolidge during his presidency.

Speaking of presidents, Joe Hackett takes a look back at other presidential visits to the Adirondacks in his column this week. This, of course, all comes in the wake of former President Barack Obama’s fishing trip in the area last week.
