LAKE PLACID – The village board had a preliminary discussion Monday on possibly raising parking meter fines and relocating some meters.

The current cost of a parking meter fine is $25, and if not paid after 30 days, a $10 lateness fee is added. The initial fine could rise to $35 in the future.

“Some find that the $25 fine is not enough of a deterrent,” said village Trustee Jason Leon.

Officer Marty Perkins of the Lake Placid Police Department patrols Main Street every day, issuing parking fines. He said he tends to double the number of tickets he writes during busy events such as the Ironman triathlon and Can-Am Rugby Tournament, and those fines are mainly issued to visitors.

“They tend to laugh off the $25 ticket,” Perkins said in a phone interview.

He often issues fines to the same locals over and over, and he agreed that the increased fine could deter them.

“I think more local people would definitely stop doing it,” he said, “but as far as tourists go, there would probably be no impact whatsoever.”

This discussion was only in regard to parking meter fines, which come from keeping your car in a spot longer than the time you paid for. This does not concern the fines for parking in loading zones or handicap spots, which are $150 and $130, respectively.

A public hearing on the matter is required, but a date is yet to be determined.

The board also discussed possibly relocating meters from the municipal lot next to the Conference Center to other streets such as Parkside Drive. The village has the infrastructure to install parking meters, but purchasing one new machine can cost upward of $6,000.

“A plan we had at the moment is we would be able to recycle the meters from the main lot around town,” said Mayor Craig Randall.

The main lot would then utilize a gated system, where people pick up tickets on their way in and then pay for however long they stayed on their way out.

Starting at $1.44/week.
