Preview of this week’s Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID – In this week’s Lake Placid News, we begin with the sounds of the season, the Christmas season, by profiling the three choral groups in the region.

Staff Writer Griffin Kelly spent time talking with organizers at the Northern Lights Choir, Adirondack Singers and the Northern Adirondack Vocal Ensemble. All of them recently held holiday concerts in the Tri-Lakes area.

Editor Andy Flynn gives us a sad story about the Kiwanis Club of Lake Placid, which disbanded on Sept. 30 due to dwindling membership. The club, which focused specifically on the children of the community, would have been 91 years old on Dec. 8.

In other news, Griffin spent time with Dan Wood for our Up Close feature. Wood recently retired as the Olympic Center’s supervisor of ice and rink maintenance after being there for 36 years.

Griffin also gives us a report from the Lake Placid village board, which is thinking about becoming a member of the U.S. Green Building Council; and a story about arrests made in connection with the drowning death of Saige Borden earlier this year.

News from around the Tri-Lakes includes the awarding of grants from the North Country Regional Economic Development Council to businesses and organizations in Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake; the 75th anniversary of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society; and an announcement that the Big Tupper Ski Area will open next winter.

In addition to columns from Naj Wikoff (On the Scene), Martha Allen (Martha Sez) and Yvona Fast (North Country Kitchen), North Country Public Radio’s North Country at Work feature explores the history of Old Forge in the town of Webb, which transformed itself from a logging town to a winter sports destination.

SPORTS

In sports this week, Senior Sports Writer Lou Reuter covered the Viessmann Luge World Cup, which was held last week at the Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg. He has all the news from USA Luge, which announced its picks for the 10-member squad competing in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February.

Lou also gives us an update on the local high school hockey teams.

In other Olympic news, we have an update from the U.S. Biathlon Team, which competed last week in a World Cup event in France. We’re tracking the progress of Lake Placid’s Lowell Bailey and Paul Smiths native Tim Burke, who was nominated to his fourth spot on an Olympic team.

Skating correspondent Christie Sausa covered the beginning of speedskating season in Lake Placid at the Oval with the first metric meet of the season, the Adirondack All-Around Championships on Saturday, Dec. 16.

OUTDOORS

In outdoor news, Outdoors Writer Justin A. Levine reports on the Adirondack Mountain Club’s updated version of its fire tower guide book, “Views from on High.” It is the first time the 2001 book has been updated. In addition to trail and condition updates, the new version includes trail descriptions to fire towers outside of the Adirondack and Catskill parks.
