The 30 participating artists will display new works, inspired by original glass plate negatives from the early 1900s.

This new exhibit will be on display at the LPCA Fine Arts Gallery through April 12. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is free.

The opening reception will honor Dr. George Hart for rescuing the original Barry Collection glass plate negatives from destruction several decades ago.

More than 8,000 glass plate negatives were rescued by Dr. George Hart from destruction in the 1970s. These negatives – used by photographers before modern camera technology -were primarily created by artists involved with the Lake Placid Club. Now known as the Barry Collection, the glass plates depict life in the Adirondacks. From sports and family activities to wildlife and family life, the images are rare and one-of-a-kind. The collection was gifted to the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, where it has remained until this show. Now the LPCA is passing it along for safe keeping to the Historical Society.

In honor of this transition, the two organizations asked thirty modern artists to search through the images, choose one and re-imagine it in modern terms. The results, some very literal, some very imaginative, are all original.
