New York fire department chief accused of theft

July 2, 2014

MINETTO, N.Y. (AP) — The fire chief of a small upstate New York town has been accused of stealing nearly $20,000.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says Minetto Chief Joseph Smegelsky Jr. is charged with grand larceny after using department credit cards to buy guns, motorcycle equipment and other personal items.

DiNapoli says the purchases were found during an audit of the Oswego County department and referred to the state police, who arrested Smegelsky on Tuesday.

He was arraigned in Volney town court. It's unclear if he has a lawyer.

A call to Smegelsky's home went unanswered.
