Is it live, or is it Facebook Watch?

Ironman Lake Placid pro race streamed to thousands around the world, archived for people to see anytime

LAKE PLACID - You didn't have to be in this village Sunday, July 28 to see the Ironman Lake Placid triathlon. In fact, most people who viewed the race - the professional males, anyway - were not in town. They saw it on Facebook Watch from locations around the world.

Like it does for all its races, Ironman hires men and women to operate hand-held cameras and drones for their free Facebook Watch video streaming. In Lake Placid, that meant camera operators on the beach, in a boat, wading in the water and controlling a drone in the air for the 2.4-mile swim. For the 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run sections, there were camera operators on three motorcycles.

"We will always have someone with the lead male, always have someone with the second-place male and then the third one will kind of float and cover other pros," Ironman Director of Digital Marketing Jay Druba told the volunteer team captains Thursday evening, July 25, during a dinner meeting at the High Peaks Resort.

Druba explained how Facebook Watch worked, answered questions and showed captains the red bibs the drone and camera operators would be wearing, numbered 1 through 10. He also showed them the red decals that would be placed on the motorcycles.

"Our goal is always safety first," Druba said. "If you see one of those bibs, you'll know it's a Facebook Watch camera operator."

Videos from the Ironman Lake Placid traiathlon - including interviews and features - are archived and can be viewed at www.facebook.com/IRONMANnow.
