Catholics standing with the Jewish community

November 2, 2018
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

To our sisters and brothers of the Jewish community, we stand with you! The slaughter of 11 Americans during Shabbat morning services at a synagogue in Pittsburgh is an outrageous attack upon all of us. The prayer of the Catholic Church in the High Peaks is with the victims, their families, the first responders, and with Rabbi Alec Friedmann and the congregation of the Lake Placid Synagogue.

Anti-Jewish bigotry, and all religious and ethnic bigotry, is morally wrong - it is a terrible sin. Mahatma Gandhi said, "Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions." There is a growing tide of hostile words in our country that has incited actions undermining the safety of people of color, immigrants, Muslims, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. The massacre in Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue is not the first act of terror provoked against a minority group in our country by antagonistic words.

The Hebrew-Christian scriptures teach that every human being is made in the image of God. This means all of us! May our words and actions always reflect this deep belief. May the words of our prayer lead to a greater love for all our sisters and brothers. God asks nothing less of us. God begs us back to our common humanity as God's sons and daughters.

In the God who gives us strength,

Rev. John Yonkovig
