By MIRIAM HADDEN - Zonta Club of the Adirondacks , Lake Placid News

Zonta Club of the Adirondacks has two fun events planned for September.

On Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Heaven Hill Farm, 302 Bear Cub Lane, Lake Placid, the club will host a Middle Eastern themed social/membership drive, after a brief meeting about upcoming events. Johnna Macdougall, the acclaimed African dance instructor and wellness educator of Somabeats, Inc., will lead the group in a Middle Eastern style dance lesson. This event is free and open to all prospective club members and those interested in learning more about the club.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Club, together with Stop Domestic Violence, will host its second annual Chili 5K Run/Walk at Heaven Hill Farm. Proceeds from this family friendly event will be used to purchase duffel bags filled with essentials (such as toiletries) for survivors of domestic violence who have been displaced from their homes and placed in "safe housing" provided by Stop DV and other organizations working with Stop DV.

The run/walk will start at 10 a.m. Event day registration will begin at 9 a.m., however, participants are encouraged to register in advance at, and will save money if they do so. Preregistration at Eventbrite on or before Sept. 28 is $25 per adult, $10 for children under 18, and $30 per family or sports team. Race day registration is $25 per adult, $15 for children under 18, and $40 per family or sports team.

The run/walk will start near the house on Heaven Hill Farm, where race day registration will also be. From there, participants will head to the Heaven Hill Trails, where they can either run or walk the 5k course, which is mostly flat and wooded. There will be no shortage of incredible scenery and natural beauty to take in during the event. This is a great opportunity to discover the Heaven Hill trail system for those unfamiliar with it, and a beautiful time of year to do it.

After completing the course, participants can enjoy refreshments and a bowl of either vegetarian or meat chili prepared by Desperados Restaurant staff at the post-race social. Harmony Hill Farm will be supplying meat and Fledging Crow Farm will be supplying vegetables used for the chili. Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth is also sponsoring the event with a generous cash donation.

Last year, the club raised enough money with the Chili 5K to purchase 10 duffel bags filled with essentials, which were donated to Stop DV. This supply of bags was exhausted in a matter of weeks to displaced domestic violence survivors throughout Essex and Clinton counties.

Zonta Club of the Adirondacks is a charitable organization with the mission of advancing gender equality. All donations to Zonta Club of the Adirondacks are tax deductible.
